Castro (2005), Castro (2019), Pantano (2007) y Thebas (2005).
convierten en soportes de subjetividad y expresión cultural.; This thesis investigates the processes of conceiving and composing clown personas, focusing on the aesthetic and subjective dimensions that permeate the creative process. The primary objective is to understand how subjective aspects act as catalysts in the construction of stage makeup, as well as to analyze clown makeup as a realm of aesthetic and identity-based creation. The research adopts a qualitative approach based on aesthetic analysis, a questionnaire, and observation of the creative processes of artists from Maranhão: Michelle Cabral (Palhaça Palita), Sandra Cordeiro (Palhaça Fulustreca), and Gilson César (Clown Manga Rosa). The study stems primarily from my experiences as an artistic makeup artist and researcher, my interactions with clowns, and other experiences related to the figure of the clown. It draws upon discourses regarding the clown by Bolognesi (2003), Castro (2005, 2019), Pantano (2007), and Thebas (2005). Regarding makeup, it engages with the work of Sampaio (2015), Magalhães (2010), and Homem (2018). Concepts of characterization are based on Stanislavski (2017), Pavis (2007; 2011), and Pereira (2023), while the analysis of subjectivity draws on studies by Silva (2009) and Montanheiro (2023). The results indicate that stage makeup transcends the visual aspect, constituting a space for memory, ritual, and identity construction. The study concludes that, for the clown, makeup establishes a territory of invention and aesthetic resistance, where the body and face become vehicles for subjectivity and cultural expression.

Abstract: This dissertation investigates the use of Newspaper Theater, a technique of the Theater of the
Oppressed, as a pedagogical tool to strengthen youth protagonism and critical consciousness in
a peripheral school context. The research was conducted at the Vereador José Carlos Costa
Pereira Basic Education Unit, located in the Vila Epitácio Cafeteira neighborhood, in the
municipality of Paço do Lumiar (MA), a territory marked by social inequalities, symbolic
stigmatization, and recurring situations of violence and oppression. The central problem guiding
the study is to understand how theater education, through Newspaper Theater, can contribute to
students' critical reflection on oppressive relationships experienced in everyday school and
community life, encouraging practices of resistance, participation, and social transformation.
The research adopts a qualitative approach, of an exploratory nature, based on action research,
in which the researcher simultaneously acts as a teacher-mediator of the pedagogical process.
The research corpus consists of theatrical practices carried out with 7th-grade students of
Elementary School, including theatrical games, scene improvisations, discussion circles, entries
in a logbook, and oral narratives produced by the participants themselves, here referred to as
spect./students. The data analysis is supported by the assumptions of Discourse Analysis,
especially those of Pêcheux and Orlandi, combined with the contributions of Paulo Freire,
Augusto Boal, and Flávio Desgranges. The results show that Newspaper Theater enables the
re-signification of naturalized discourses about oppression, identity, and belonging, by
transforming everyday experiences into scenic and discursive material. A progressive shift is
observed among students from positions marked by silence to more critical, participatory, and
proactive stances, characterizing the emergence of youth protagonism both in the school setting
and in community relationships. It is concluded that Teatro Jornal, by integrating aesthetics,
politics, and education, constitutes a powerful pedagogical practice for the democratization of
theater teaching in public schools, contributing to formative processes committed to
emancipation, listening, and social transformation in peripheral contexts.

Abstract: This work investigates the presence and use of theatrical masks in the productions of
the COTEATRO group in São Luís, Maranhão. The study focuses on the analysis of
the shows "The Process of the Ants" and "Tales that Time Tells," establishing a
dialogue between the scenic mask and the universe of popular Maranhão folklore.
The research aims to verify the typologies and aesthetic functions of the masks used,
understanding how these objects operate in the dramaturgical construction of the
scene and in the director's language. Methodologically, the work adopts an
exploratory qualitative approach, based on bibliographic research, document
analysis, and ex-post-facto research, complemented by field investigation. The
investigation proposes the cataloging and registration of the masks, analyzing the
relationship between the actor/performer and the masked performance. The results
point to an intersection between the tradition of puppet theater and local cultural
matrices, consolidating the mask as a central element of the visual and dramaturgical
identity of the works analyzed.

Abstract: The dissertation titled “Circle Dance: Possibilities of Reinterpretations in dialogue
with the Cultural Heritage of São Luís - MA” analyzes as empirical material a
collective creation process carried out with high school students from the public
school system of Maranhão. The study’s objective was the reinterpretation of five
choreographies from the Cacuriá Balaio de Rosas (LABORARTE), employing the
foundations of Sacred Circle Dances. Methodologically, this qualitative investigation
is structured as a Didactic Sequence that articulates bibliographic research and
fieldwork, utilizing interviews, questionnaires, and multimodal records (photographic
and audiovisual), grounded in the relationship between artistic-cultural reception and
mediation. The practice investigates how elements of the visual mandalas from the
Portuguese tiles of the Historic Center and the movements of the Cacuriá offer traces
and memories for the reinterpretation of wheel dances, as corporal mandalas, within
the context of dance-education. Reflecting on the pedagogy of performing arts
through dance, intersected by hybridism in the arts, the study analyzes the
body-school and body-city relationship as territory, identity, and belonging. The
results evidence that such pedagogical articulation enhances the appreciation of
popular culture and the preservation of the tile heritage. By disseminating
artistic-cultural knowledge and practices, the proposal contributes to the
safeguarding of local memory and reiterates the historical relevance of São Luís as a
World Cultural Heritage site.
